Working with Lead - major overhaul of regulations claw 2002
The HSE is proposing a major overhaul of the Control of Lead at Work Regulations (CLAW), and if your business works with lead, you need to pay attention.
We are looking at a drastic reduction in blood-lead action and suspension levels—with some thresholds dropping by up to 80% by 2029. This isn’t just a minor update; it’s a fundamental shift in how our industry must manage safety, hygiene, and medical surveillance.
The Headlines:
- Massive Threshold Drops: For general employees, suspension levels will fall from 60 μg/dL today to just 15 μg/dL by 2029.
- Reproductive Safety: Action levels for women of reproductive capacity will drop to 5 μg/dL as early as 2027.
- Stricter Hygiene: A renewed focus on behavioural controls and hygiene practices to mitigate exposure.
- End of Concessions: The “long-service employee” concession is set to be phased out entirely by 2034.
Why We Need to Act Now
These changes will have significant operational and financial implications. The HSE is specifically looking for evidence on the costs of compliance and potential unintended consequences. Our industry’s feedback is vital to ensure these standards are both protective and practicable.
The consultation is open until 24 May 2026. I strongly encourage everyone in the sector to review the proposals and submit their views.
